Abstract
:
The Saudi family depends totally on electrical energy for carrying out its daily activities at home. The main objective of this study is to define the amount of energy needed for each activity. The study consists of two main parts: 1. Collecting, classifying and analyzing the data concerning the use of electrical appliances usually available in contemporary Saudi houses. These data help in estimating the amount of energy consumed by each appliance category. 2. Collecting , classifying and analyzing the data reflecting actual energy consumption for the housing complex to assess the variations in energy consumption due to changes in the climatic conditions. Also studying the influence of Riyadh climate on the rates of energy consumption in residential buildings. The main conclusions and findings could be summarized as follows: ? Electrical energy consumption by residential buildings in Riyadh is very high when compared with the consumption of similar residential units in Australia, U.K. or U.S.A. ? Electrical energy consumption by artificial lighting is greater than the estimates for other countries, despite the fact that Riyadh climate provides considerable opportunities for the utilization of natural lighting. ? The maximum electrical energy is consumed by air-conditioning during the hot season, followed by refrigerators, artificial lighting and clothes washing, drying and ironing.
